These are fine poems to appreciate, admire, and, primarily, to enjoy. The poems are written in a range of styles, each one based on Woolf's own words. A snippet from the body of her work - novels, diaries, letters, autobiographical writings, plus a sketch or photograph - provides the catalyst for the poems and a context to understand them. To Woolf's language, Barbara Fried adds the layer of her own poetic imagination. The poems read like a continuation of Woolf's solitary thoughts or like a conversation with a friend or with her husband. Overall, "The Virginia Poems" could serve as a stimulating introduction to her oeuvre. Ms. Fried has here given a virtuoso performance that sounds the many notes and melodies of Woolf's life and work. One feels grateful to have read them. Barbara Fried is a wonderful, accomplished writer.
