Because we love what we do, and the walls of our world are graced with many of these custom creations, we thought our fellow lovers of “book cover art” might enjoy this fine art print as well. Whether displayed in a hallway, the kitchen, or your office, it is a visceral reminder of life’s possibilities when storytelling and visual art merge.

“With each cover I create, a personal relationship develops, and in this case it is this story of alcohol and its influence on life, and a vacation. After 30 plus years of sobriety, I could relate. The cover concept for Moroccan Holiday, from the start, revolved around the desert, architecture, and of course, the beautiful mosaic tile work. The entire concept was driven by Lauren Tivey’s poems of struggle, in a world of beautiful art, culture, color, and temptation.” —Robert Sanders

Rheanna Haaland had a very specific request for the cover of her book, An Eyeful of Hennepin Neon, so it was up to Robert to create a custom illustration to convey the mood of the poems inside.

The original photo of the monument, taken by the author’s wife, had a wonderful spirit about it, a very quiet energy, so it was wonderful blending, imaging this light energy all around throughout. With the story of Mary Dwyer, the Quaker history within the poetry contained, that sense of spirit evolved naturally to create this custom cover for Mary Dyer’s Hymn & Other Quaker Poems.

Whether displayed in a hallway, the kitchen, or your office, it is a visceral reminder of life’s possibilities when storytelling and visual art merge.

We knew the cover of Cardboard Wings needed to convey the youthful energy of the poet as well as the poetry inside the collection. After getting to know Piper, our young author, and working from the title, Shawn came up with a concept for Robert to create the digital illustration for an inviting, young, vibrant cover for our first “Young Artists” poetry collection.

Emotionally, this cover for Breakpoint was one of my most invested cover creations; the poetry drove the theme of this image. Following a brief conversation with the author, Christopher Bogart, and then reading through the manuscript, the image evolved quickly. Illustrating the stars flying from the field of blue brought me to tears—as a veteran I felt hurt; our country was in distress.

“My Life in Cars”

Because we love what we do, and the walls of our world are graced with many of these custom creations, we thought our fellow lovers of “book cover art” might enjoy this fine art print as well. Whether displayed in a hallway, the kitchen, or your office, it is a visceral reminder of life’s possibilities when storytelling and visual art merge.

As a kid I was all about cars, model cars, drawing cars, eventually working on a few. When Linda Strever’s My Life in Cars appeared, I was suddenly in an altogether familiar, albeit old, state of joy. Not only cars, but there was the 1964 Chevy Impala, a childhood favorite. After reading the stories inside, illustrating the Impala was a visceral dream.

Whether displayed in a hallway, the kitchen, or your office, it is a visceral reminder of life’s possibilities when storytelling and visual art merge.

The initial cover ideas generated from Ralph Long’s poems in A Democracy Divided, revolved around the Statue of Liberty, as well as the Union being divided. One ideal led to another, mostly playing with the new divisional cliche, Red v. Blue, the separation of opinion. That pulled the concept in a direction of a more emotional symbol of our freedom, the bald eagle, crying for our democracy, the tear clearly red and blue.

The cover art for Sophia & Mister Walter Whitman (by Penelope Scambly Schott) was inspired by Penelope’s collection of persona poetry told through the “voice” of her beloved dog, Sophia, and her “conversations” with Walt Whitman. Penelope prepared Sophia for her special photoshoot with Robert, and what a delightful canine-model she was! Using an old photo of Walt Whitman (via creative commons), Robert was able to create this magical portrait of Sophia and Walt having quite the conversation. Ruff! Ruff!

The cover illustration for Sitting in Powell’s Watching Burnside Dissolve in Rain (by Doug Stone) was inspired by Doug’s poetry and his love for Nighthawks by artist Edward Hopper. Robert worked with Doug to illustrate this uniquely Portland scene—a lone reader sitting inside Powell’s Books on another rainy night downtown, where the streetlight illuminates the puddles and raindrops spark the imagination of a writer.
