“The Poeming Pigeon: From Pandemic to Protest”

The first eleven issues of The Poeming Pigeon featured original cover illustrations by Robert R. Sanders, introducing “Homer” our pigeon mascot donning his favorite chapeaus & unique accessories to celebrate each thematic issue.

When the world came to a stop, the poets picked up their pens and Robert picked up his sketch pad. The poems informed by the devasting year that was 2020 recounted a multitude of heartbreaking stories, and the cover needed to represent the broad range of topics. Homer was transformed into a doctor on the frontlines of the pandemic in his surgical mask and cap, who after an exhaustive shift at the hospital, supported his fellow humans in the Black Lives Matter protests. The hope evident in so many of the poems helped Homer rise like a phoenix above the burnt landscapes of the fires that devastated our planet.

For our tenth issue, we wanted to celebrate the lighter side of life. And when we thought about Pop Culture, those classic images of Marilyn Monroe by Andy Warhol became the inspiration for the four neon-colored panels of Homer. Robert then added some pop-art details à la Roy Lichtenstein to create our most eye-popping cover art to date.

What happens when a bird decides to soar higher than all the other birds? Robert was ready to help our Homer go where no pigeon had gone before. Wearing his NASA approved helmet and a telescope under his wing, the Milky Way was just the beginning. Rumor has it Bezos and Musk are competing to take the first Poeming Pigeon to Mars—10…9…8…7…6…

We’re not sure how a pigeon could actually play sports, and maybe most simply watch from the rafters. But that didn’t stop Homer from giving it the ole college try. Donning his Portland “P” baseball cap, a tennis racket and golf club under his wing, he’s ready to grab a baseball bat and swing for the fences. He must have been inspired by the winning poems inside the book.

In the days of fake news and sensational headlines, Robert wanted to give Homer a more respectful journalist image. Harking back to the days of Murrow and Cronkite, Homer dons his fedora with his press pass tucked into the hat band. Robert then brought him into the present day with an iPad under his wing for reading the latest headlines, contrasted with the analog rolled newspaper bearing the title theme.

Who knew? Homer is quite the romantic pigeon. Looking dapper in his top hat and bow tie to court his sweetheart hen, he’d never show up without roses and a book of love poems to woo her. And always the gentlemen, he’d ask before pecking her on the cheek as he bid her a sweet goodnight.

Homer’s musical talents go way beyond birdsong and cooing. Turns out he’s quite the violin virtuoso and marching band conductor too. And of course, since his illustrator is also an accomplished drummer, Robert added a pair of drumsticks to the title to keep the rhythm and the poetry going… a 1 and a 2 and a 3…

Naturally with The Poeming Pigeon being published in Oregon, we had to pay homage to the recent state legalization of cannabis and debut our third issue on the notorious date of 4-20. All it took was Robert illustrating Homer in the style of Bob Marley, complete with dreadlocks, a toque with the classic marijuana leaf, and a bong under his wing. And of course, a hand-rolled doobie to display the title pun.

We all know that pigeons aren’t necessarily picky eaters. But Homer has a much more sophisticated palate—for food, and now “poems about food.” Robert had fun adding a chef’s hat, spatula, and rolling pin to the illustration. Once the “cooking” was done, it was time for a picnic, complete with a red gingham tablecloth. Just watch out for those ants; luckily, they were only crawling on a corner of the back cover. Bon Appetit!
