Pop Culture

From entertainment to fashion to techno-widgets, pop culture can mirror the beliefs and lifestyles of a society at any given time. Not only does the iconography of pop culture influence consumerism, the objects associated with it can also be a welcomed distraction from our oftentimes stressful world. We invite you to relax and enjoy these 72 poems through their wide lens of whimsy, nostalgia, and social commentary.

Cosmos

What’s out there in the great beyond? Could we survive on Mars? What is dark matter?
Sample Poems:

How Everything Began

by Bruce Meyer

        ~in memory of Stephen Hawking

Because the universe needed answers,
he took the voice of an answering machine,

and when the universe almost listened,
it heard how everything began as questions.

Tonight, with sleeping pills ingested,
I close my eyes to time and temper,

knowing somewhere everything belongs
to a piece of ancient matter torn by light.

If I dream the numb dream of death
before waking to the spark of morning sun,

in that mortal sleep of silent thoughts,
I shall pass a traveler on his way to forever,

and think of that moment as an eternal now,
then say it was the instant all nows began.

Cosmosity

by David Belmont

after
providence
destiny
kismet
and fate

before
serendipity
synergy
synchronicity
and sympatico

there was cosmic

as in
that was cosmic, man

a simple happy thing
that made you smile
even when you weren’t tripping

Sample Poems:

The Baseball Player Stephen Crane
by Alan Catlin

“I did little work at Syracuse, but
confined my abilities such as they were,
to the diamond.” ~ Stephen Crane

Manny French’s fastball rocked him back
on his heels but Crane refused to wear
the padded glove for catching.
Although his hands would be red from
the constant impact of the hard ball,
bruised after nine rounds of catching,
his expression never changed and his
enthusiasm for the game never waned.
Jumping up after each third strike,
although his hands were numb and his arm
weak, he would throw the ball down to
third as hard as he could. Never a strong
hitter, he was a capable one, even shrewd
in his placement, making the most of what
he had with an energy level that would
compensate for the lack of raw talent.
After every game he was the first man
at the pool hall for a beer and eight ball,
preferring as he would later, a famous
writer, the talk of the tavern to that of
the literate man. Education, he felt, was
better learned on the ball field, attributing
his knowledge of war to what he saw on
the baseball field, time clearly well spent
for a man who memorialized a war he never saw.

More Than Sport
by Margaret Van Every

It was sport and more than sport.
It was do or die when we were
young and fit and drove ourselves
to beat all others to the finish.
It was sport but more like life
or death to rise before the light
and polish off the miles beneath
the moon before we went to work.
If we succumbed to sloth and
stayed in bed, the competition
wouldn’t. They’d be up and at it,
gain split seconds on us, beat us
by a hair. Ah, but we weren’t beating
them, we were beating age, for we
looked younger than our peers, we
had joints of steel, the drive of turbines.
We were tough, believed we’d last
forever. We had records, medals,
trophies, clippings. Years of pounding
pavement, swimming laps, pedaling
miles, lifting iron. And what did it get
us? Bionic knees, injured shoulders,
repetitive strain and pain, back and
neck gone bad, dusty trophies and
medals laid curbside, records
smashed by younger and swifter
who rose earlier and risked even more
than we. And none of us ever ask why.

In The News

We live in a world where access to breaking news is available 24/7. But how often do we go beyond the headline? What happened next? What was the impact on our fellow humans across the globe? Can we learn? Can we change? Can we make a difference? We invite the world to read these poems and start a conversation—perhaps one that is way overdue.

Sample Poems:

Take a Knee
by Jane Yolen

Take mine, I give it freely,
though it’s hardly worth the bend.
Filled now with metal,
worn from years of dancing,
fencing, walking for justice,
standing on vigil lines.

Take mine if you will,
though you will find it stiff
from trudging at night
to comfort babies, grandbabies;
from watching for birds, bobcats;
Standing on podiums giving lectures.

Take mine if you can.
I may have but ten years
more use in it anyway.
If it can support justice,
bring comfort to the distraught,
help the weak walk, lead the poor to work.

Take it if it can help children run,
students cross streets,
the poor to stand tall,
pickers kneel in the field,
union men and women long on lines.
Then take my knee indeed.

On Hearing News of the Massacre Of The Children
~ After Milton’s “On the Late Massacre in the Piedmont”
by Veer Frost

To remember, not where I was
but what
a child is

Still mostly soul
in sudden hummingbird halts
and starts
toward embodiment,

And how the rambunctious light
out of a child’s skin
comes and goes
back in

As if it has two homes
and need not choose
between the springing cowslip world
and migrant heaven.

For our 5th issue of The Poeming Pigeon (vol 3.2), Homer takes us back to our roots – literally and metaphorically. Enjoy this collection of over 80 poems that celebrates dirt under our fingernails, seed catalog dreams, sharing zucchini with our neighbors, and this labor-of-love we call gardening.

Doobie or Not Doobie?

Doobie or Not Doobie? The legalization of medical and recreational marijuana (cannabis) is a hot topic facing America and other countries across the globe. Homer examines this controversial issue through an international curated collection of poems and stories. You’ll enjoy tales of hilarious first encounters with the herb, gratitude for the escape from physical pain, fellowship in passing the spliff and learn why some prefer not to partake in the “madness.” So, light up (or not) and enjoy!

Poems about Food

Homer, our Poeming Pigeon mascot, has been hunting and pecking to gather the most delicious poetry for a new collection of poems from around the globe – all about food. Allow us to whet your appetite with an opening poem by Oregon Poet Laureate Emerita, Paulann Petersen, followed by a feast of verse that may not only make your mouth water, but your eyes well-up too. Food not only nourishes our body, it can feed our soul. What’s your favorite food? You just might find a poem about it inside this journal of poetry.
