“Poeming Pigeons: Poems about Birds”
The first eleven issues of The Poeming Pigeon featured original cover illustrations by Robert R. Sanders, introducing “Homer” our pigeon mascot donning his favorite chapeaus & unique accessories to celebrate each thematic issue.
The cover illustration for the inaugural anthology, Poeming Pigeons: Poems about Birds that started the journal series now known as The Poeming Pigeon, was inspired by Shawn’s desire to overcome her lifelong fear of birds. Robert and Shawn started brainstorming on ideas and “Homer, the poeming pigeon” was born. Robert started sketching a pigeon donning a vintage leather helmet and John Lennon-esque spectacles. Armed with his might pen nib and proudly displaying his “Birditzer” award, soon Homer was ready to deliver poems to bird lovers all around the globe.
