Congratulations on writing, re-writing, and shaping your work into a polished manuscript. Now you’re ready to choose a publisher—That’s right, I said “choose” your publisher.

Why Choose The Poetry Box® as Your Publisher?

We created The Poetry Box® Cooperative Publishing Program to offer poets a professional, trustworthy, and affordable option for publishing their full-length poetry collections and chapbooks. We began offering our hybrid model of publishing in 2015 and have produced 130 poetry collections under this paradigm so far. And we attribute this success to the talented authors we’ve had the privilege to work with, as well our commitment to these basic principles—

  • Clear & Timely Communication
  • Authors Retain Rights to Their Work
  • Respect for Copyright & Licensing
  • Adhering to Industry Standards of Practice
  • Straightforward Contracts
  • Expertise in Book Design
  • Promoting & Supporting Our Authors

  • Shawn PittardShawn Pittardauthor of Witness

I feel very fortunate that The Poetry Box Press invited me to publish Witness, my chapbook of poems, with them. Shawn and Robert are the consummate professionals. They treat the poems and the poet with respect. They clearly communicated the process of creating a book and promoting a book with me, helping me understand my role and responsibilities as the author. When my author's copies arrived, my first thought was: Oh man, this is a beautiful book. All my expectations were met or exceeded. I'm proud to be associated with The Poetry Box Press.

  • Ginny Lowe ConnorsGinny Lowe Connorsauthor, White Sail at Midnight

I can highly recommend The Poetry Box. Shawn and Robert were helpful and very professional throughout the process. They published my collection White Sail at Midnight, and the end-result is a book that I’m very happy with.

  • Lana Hechtman AyersLana Hechtman Ayersauthor, When All Else Fails

  • Janet StewardJanet Stewardauthor, Now Is What Matters

The Poetry Box published my chapbook, Now Is What Matters. This was my first experience with publishing my work, and they made the process easy to understand and were exceptional good to work with. On top of all that, Shawn and Robert are really nice folks.

  • Sue Fagalde LickSue Fagalde Lickauthor, Blue Chip Stamp Guitar & The Widow at the Piano

I worked with The Poetry Box to publish two chapbooks, The Widow at the Piano and Blue Chip Stamp Guitar. Each time, it was a wonderful experience. Shawn Aveningo Sanders made me feel special every step of the way. Robert Sanders’ covers are gorgeous. I was included in every decision, and these little books are works of art. I will keep coming back and I encourage my fellow poets to do the same.”

  • Emily-Sue SloaneEmily-Sue Sloaneauthor, Disconnects and Other Broken Threads

Thank you, Shawn!

  • Claudia F. Saleeby SavageClaudia F. Saleeby Savageauthor, Metal Used for Beauty Alone

The Poetry Box (specifically the phenomenal team of Shawn and Robert) want your poetry vision to be manifest. They are artists themselves and understand how every creation is a tender thing that needs nourishing, as well as tough love. That would be enough for a publisher, but The Poetry Box goes beyond just nurturing to being a force of professionalism, support, and knowledge about poetry and the best way to get your work in the hands of as many readers as possible. Being a somewhat scattered, messy creative I didn’t realize how much I needed Shawn’s consistent contact by email and phone to keep me on the right track, so that I could get my work into the world with grace and confidence. Robert, as a designer and artist, was an avid listener and rendered my cover vision quickly and deftly. I can’t rave enough about how this team has created community, love and beauty—one book at a time. Anyone publishing with them will be in excellent hands.

  • Grace RichardsGrace Richardsauthor, Break Up Hair and Other Poems

When The Poetry Box accepted my chapbook, Break-Up Hair, I was pleased, but now that the book is out, I am thrilled with the finished product. The professional layout and stunning cover design make it an absolutely beautiful little book that is sure to catch the eye of poetry lovers.

I would highly recommend The Poetry Box and its cooperative publishing model. Shawn’s clear and timely communication before and after publication made it a pleasure to work with her. She even scheduled my first online reading.

  • Kazimieras CampeKazimieras Campeauthor, Why Do We Look Up?

From first contact to final publication, it was a pleasant journey.  The evolution of my chapbook, from initial submittal through final editing, cover design and ultimately publication and promotion, was timely and hassle-free.  If I ever publish again, I would assuredly go to The Poetry Box.

  • Joel SavishinskyJoel Savishinskyauthor, Our Aching Bones, Our Aching Hearts

  • Mark ThalmanMark Thalmanauthor, Stronger Than the Current
The books arrived this afternoon!  They look great! Holding the book has a nice cushiony feel from the finish on the cover.  And, having just read every word cover to cover, I am extremely happy with how the whole book turned out. If I haven't mentioned it before, the paragraph you wrote for the back cover is superb.  Thanks for making this an enjoyable experience.
  • Michael B. Carroll Jr.Michael B. Carroll Jr.author, The Dichotomy Between Light & Dark (2019) and Songs of an Indomitable Spirit (2020)

To say that working with Shawn Aveningo Sanders and “The Poetry Box” was a pleasure would be a profound understatement. As the author of The Dichotomy Between Light and Dark (2019) and  Songs of an Indomitable Spirit (2020), both published by The Poetry Box, I must say that my experience in working with Shawn has exceeded my wildest expectations. From the beginning, Shawn was a consummate professional who more than delivered on every promise. From editing, designing, even down to marketing, The Poetry Box has done a fabulous job. Never once did my creativity throughout the process feel stifled. Shawn collaborated with me over the project, up to and including the review and final approval of the artwork for the cover of my chapbook. What was most amazing, and pleasantly surprising, was Shawn’s decision to release my chapbook just days ahead of schedule. I was over the moon! I truly felt valued and appreciated as an artist and contributor to The Poetry Box.

  • Carolyn MartinCarolyn MartinAuthor, The Way a Woman Knows, 2015

Working with Shawn and Robert on my second collection, The Way a Woman Knows, was an author’s dream. From the initial explanations of how The Poetry Box works to publish  high-quality books, to involving me in choices of cover-design, to the on-time delivery of an exquisite book I am proud to have my name on: the experience was professional, instructive, and fun. I’d definitely recommend Shawn, Robert, and The Poetry Box to any author who’s ready to turn a manuscript into a book they want to share with the world.

We Are Selective, Yet Inclusive

We do not accept every manuscript that is submitted for publication. We are not a vanity press. We will not put The Poetry Box® imprint on a book that doesn’t meet our standards. We abide by the Hybrid Publisher’s Criteria set forth by the IBPA (Independent Book Publishing Association) and follow their professional publishing industry standards.

Our catalog includes writers from varied backgrounds and level of experience—both prolific and promising. We’ve had the honor to publish many well-established, beloved poets, and we’ve also enjoyed introducing talented, new & emerging voices to the literary landscape.

We enjoy poems of all styles: formal, free verse, lyrical, metered, experimental, nostalgic, political, erasure, abstract, etc. We don’t censor or shy away from tough topics, however we do draw the line at poetry that discriminates against our fellow humans.
