Description

Lessons in Buoyancy

by Kristin Roedell

Lessons in Buoyancy is a book about women’s lives, and their transformation through time. Divided into three parts, The Maiden, The Mother, The Crone, it’s based upon the Celtic archetype of the Tri-Goddess. Each section contains poems that explore joy, loss, endurance, and continuing rebirth. The book recognizes the value of growing older, of embracing the “Crone”, (revealed here as a being of wisdom and grace), but it’s written for women of any age. If you’re a woman seeking to understand your journey, this book is for you. You will find a kinship of women who share the mystery of the Tri-Goddess; the author invites you to commune with them as you read these poems for a unique, life-altering experience.

Early Praise

“Kristin Roedell is one of today’s finest emerging poets; Lessons in Buoyancy is a lyrical exploration of the author’s journey from youth to elder, maiden to crone. Her work is both personal and universal, expressing hard truths through forceful imagery. Here the author explores girlhood, motherhood, the death of her own mother, and a lifelong face-off with mental illness. Few contemporary poets write about mental health issues with more perceptivity than Kristin Roedell. These poems—these women—matter; they are essential and irreplaceable. Lessons in Buoyancy is a lifeline, and a welcome tonic.”

—JANA HARRIS, poet, novelist, essayist,Pushcart Prize winner, author of Horses Never Lie About Love

Mirroring

I am giving up beauty.
Not the silver thickets and the sandpipers
Not the grass beneath the lake,
not the way my child’s hair eddies
when I rinse it in the bath—
but the lighted rooms when
tall and cool
I am effortlessly suspended in the
wordless hush of sight and gifted desire,
drifting quiet like a trout at the water’s edge,
pulled by a gentle current.

I will learn eyes that look outwards.
Since I no longer pull and sing like the current,

when a river butterfly
touches silent surfaces with delicate feet,
I will bend to meet it myself.
When an egret stands in the
marsh shallows with folded wings,
I will call it lovely.
This is beautiful,
this is not.
This is an endless garden of reeds,
this is the forest after a rain.
