We Want Your Cosmic Poetry

March 25, 2019 by The Poetry Box Leave a Comment

From learning how to locate the Little Dipper to standing awe-struck under the Milky Way, humans have been asking: What’s out there in the great beyond? Could we survive on Mars? What is dark matter? Are wormholes the secret to time travel?  Our curiosity is as vast as the universe itself. Send us your best stargazing poems exploring the great beyond, string theory and black holes.  Make a case for Pluto–planet or not planet? This theme is yours to take to the outer limits.

We’re looking for the best poetry inspired by the cosmos for our 9th issue of The Poeming Pigeon. We’re open for submissions Apr 15-Jun 15. Click HERE for all the details.

Scheduled Release Date: April 15, 2019

Cardboard Wings is the debut poetry collection by Piper Bringman, a 14-year-old poet who is coming of age. And, although her writing originally grew from a child’s grief for her beloved pet, it has blossomed into a rich voice of aspiration and charm. Join her as she explores the natural world, and shares her experience as a young curious heart navigating these modern times.

Take the chance to raise your arms
And fly into the sky on cardboard wings
Feel the sun on your shoulders
Get lost for a time
And feel yourself change

Impossible Ledges

Tentative Release Date: Apr 23, 2019

A Poetry Box Chapbook Prize (2018) Finalist

Sometimes our lives are divided in two — the before and the after. Insert something in between that is so profound, and it feels as if your very molecules are rearranged. For Dianne Avey, this was the day her soul left her body in search of her deceased husband. Impossible Ledges takes the reader on her journey through illness, death, visiting her husband in the afterlife, and returning to her ordinary life that will never be ordinary again.

Small Blue Harbor

by Ahrend Torrey

Tentative Release Date: Mar 15, 2019

In Small Blue Harbor, Ahrend Torrey exalts the ordinary, everydayness of life spinning his keen observation into lyrical poems and proems. This collection celebrates our human connection with nature, influenced by a New Orleans backdrop, and gives us a glimpse of the struggles of being gay while raised in the Deep South. Torrey’s authentic, inspirational voice will have you returning to these poems again and again, finding refuge from a world that is not always kind.

Taking Pre-Orders for “Surreal Expulsion”

January 30, 2019 by The Poetry Box Leave a Comment

Cover-Surreal Expulsion by D.R James

Surreal Expulsion

by D. R. James

Tentative Release Date: Mar 15, 2019

Surreal Expulsion’s title poem responds not only bluntly to the 2018 mass shooting that left seventeen dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School but ultimately to the socio-political negligence and indifference behind violence and injustice worldwide. In assorted other blasts D. R. James confronts contemporary issues and personal skirmishes against “sapient insufficiency” through free verse and hijacked forms (prose poem, cento, sonnet, villanelle), arresting images and twisted wit, exposé and surreality. In toto, the collection wrestles, now soberly, now sardonically, with strains of “barbarity, barrels of it” as well as of “the calm shadowy fraud.”

Taking Pre-Orders for “The Unknowable Mystery of Other People”

The Unknowable Mystery of Other People

by Sally Zakariya

Tentative Release Date: Mar 15, 2019

Take a peek into the mystery of other people as Sally Zakariya shares stories of those she knows, those she remembers from childhood, and the ones she’s merely observed throughout her daily walk in life. Each poem serves as an introduction where the poet invites us to meet this man, this woman, these folks. Not only are we invited to bear witness to their lives, but we come to realize our common ground—our humanity—rather than focusing on the differences.
